FAQ
Whom do we serve?
Advocates of patients and families in Massachusetts may apply for our grants so that they may serve patients in need.
HEI advocacy grants make patient advocacy freely available to any advocate serving patients in need with life-threatening and serious illnesses in Massachusetts.
How do I contact HEI?
Advocates may contact us at: info@heipac.org
Patients seeking advocacy services may contact: NAHAC, APHA, Greater National Advocates or MAHCA to identify a patient advocate whom they would like to work with.
As HEI evolves, one of our aspirational goals is to have our own team of advocates and, eventually, to offer grants to advocates nationwide.
Is there a cost for advocacy services?
HEI grants make patient advocacy freely available to any advocate serving patients in need with life-threatening and serious illnesses in Massachusetts.
At this time, patient advocacy is not covered by health insurance and is private pay.
While we don’t charge for our services, we depend on the generosity of individual donors to make our work possible. We rely on small contributions. Clients and families who find our work valuable often choose to make a gift to HEI in support of our mission.

How long will I work with an advocate?
We want to support your patient advocate as they offer guidance along your healthcare journey as efficiently as possible. HEI grants are a short-term support. Your advocate will work with you to create an advocacy timeline.
Not all issues can be resolved within a short time frame. In those cases, your advocate will offer guidance on how to transition your case to appropriate community resources that can work with you long-term.
Is my information kept confidential?
All staff reviewing grants and all advocates applying for HEI grants sign a Confidentiality Agreement and receive training about confidentiality and ethical practices.
